Wanzie Presents' Winter Bookings at Footlight

Currently playing: THE COMEDY WHERE? HOUSE AT THE P-HOUSE - a reunion show featuring long time improvisational performers who were displaced from their hugely popular nightly shows when Disney World closed the doors of The Comedy Warehouse at Pleasure Island one year ago this month.

The show, being presented in conjunction with Excellent Adventures Productions at the Footlight Theater, brings together longtime PI favorites Layden Sadecky, Mark Lainer, Matt Horohoe, Krista Miller, and Mary Thompson Hunt, with Carol Stein on Piano, all of whom faithfully employ the familiar improvisation-with-music format so successfully utilized for years at the former Disney comedy venue.

The final performance of THE COMEDY WHERE? HOUSE AT THE P- HOUSE will be presented on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 6 PM.

This final performance is a designated OFFICIAL WANZeGRAM Subscriber Outing. Join Wanzie and the staff of the WANZeGRAM for this very special show on Sunday at 6 PM.

HILARIOUS PARODY - DIRECT FROM NYC

THE BLUE LAGOON: A Musical, a subversively funny take on the classic tale of shipwrecked teen cousins in lust, will open on January 6, 2010, for two shows only, at The Footlight Theatre in Orlando.

THE BLUE LAGOON: A Musical is based on Henry de Vere Stacpoole's 1908 novel, The Blue Lagoon: A Romance, which has inspired several stage and screen adaptations over the years, including the infamous 1980 film starring Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins. The latest incarnation - featuring book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Padget - premiered at the 2007 Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, D.C., where it enjoyed a sold-out run and an enthusiastic response from audiences and critics.

Nelson Pressley of The Washington Post praised the show for its "lovely melodic themes," and its "playful, alternative style: two goofy performers and an inflatable baby pool as the lagoon in question - how Fringe is that?"

The New York premiere of The Blue Lagoon: A Musical at New York Cringe Fest 2009 featured Shayna Albertson (2008 graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts) as Emmeline, and Anthony Johnson, who recently performed in the NETworks North American and Asian tour of the musical Hairspray. The production of The Blue Lagoon, as directed by Orlando's own Kenny Howard at The Producers Club in Manhattan, garnered multiple Cringe Festival awards, including a Best Actor award for Johnson and a Directing award for Howard.

It is that award-winning New York production which is being faithfully recreated at the Parliament House, lock, stock, and wading pool. Shayna Albertson and Anthony Johnson are being flown in from NYC to re-create their roles in this funky little musical send-up of this classic tale of two teenage cousins who get jiggy with one another in an untamed paradise. The show will be preceded by the stand up comedy of Orlando funnyman JEFF JONES. Jones has been making quite a name for himself, not only with his monthly Mo Laughs Comedy open mic showcase, but also by performing as the opening act for various events at Hard Rock Live!

ANTHONY JOHNSON - ONE MAN CABARET

Wanzie Presents' Artistic Director Kenny Howard has engaged the talents of Orlando Musical Director John B. deHaas to accompany New York's Anthony Johnson for a one-night-only Cabaret act to be presented at the Parliament House on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 6 PM.

Johnson and Howard last worked together in New York City where Howard mounted Jonathan Paget's THE BLUE LAGOON: A Musical, which won multiple Cringe Festival Awards, including a Best Actor win for Johnson.

Johnson, 26, graduated from Catawba, a small North Carolina liberal arts college.  While still a student, Anthony was chosen to study at the prestigious Governor's School of North Carolina, and later at the American Dance Theatre in Durham. The "triple threat" performer also spent two years in Japan singing live and dancing in shows at Universal Studios, and has appeared in productions such as Damn Yankees, Oklahoma, Gypsy, Cats, and others.

In a recent National Tour of the Broadway musical Hairspray, Anthony Johnson played I.Q., "the nicest kid in town," who danced on the Corny Collins Show. He also finished in the top 3 in the highly publicized online audition contest for placement in the Broadway show, RENT, but the show closed before the contestants had the opportunity to vie for the final casting prize.

This versatile performer, who first made a name for himself by posting You Tube videos of himself singing from his bed, was last seen in Orlando in Wanzie Presents' ANTHONY JOHNSON: From YouTube To You, under the direction of Kenny Howard at the Footlight Theatre.

Specific details on the now-being-created Cabaret by Johnson, deHaas, and Howard will be fourth coming in the very near future.

Tickets (Only $10) will go on sale on Friday, January 8, 2010.

LOGO TV & MUSIC VIDEO STAR - JONNY McGOVERN

Gay pop superstar, TV personality, and nightlife legend, "Gay Pimp" Jonny McGovern blazed onto the New York scene in 2000 with his satirical mix of his character comedy and dirty gay hits, and his fire continues to burn bright.

Jonny produced his debut album Dirty Gay Hits in collaboration with IDM producer, Secret Agent Gel. Together they crafted a collection of Gay Pimp-themed songs such as Soccer Practice, Lookin' Cute/Feelin' Cute, and Hey Lil' Raver Boi. Jonny then created a dirty gay teen pop style nightclub act with a bevy of soccer/raver boi dancers, a gay rapper, and fierce drag queens workin' the runway. Jonny headlined all over Manhattan, including Homocorps at the legendary CBGB's, Joe's Pub, Splash Bar NY, LUXX, and opened for Peaches and Chicks on Speed at The Electro Clash Festival, as well as at his own white hot parties such as Boys Gone Wild, and The Rambles at The Park.

The Gay Pimp became an Internet and international phenomenon. Teaming up with Broadway veteran Richard Jay-Alexander and Director Peter Martinez, Jonny created a video for Soccer Practice which debuted in the top five of the National Video Club chart, and was downloaded over 2.2 million times from GayPimp.com, as well as getting play on MTV Europe and MTV Asia. Jonny also toured nightclubs around the country as Gay Pimp, and headlined the legendary Caroline's On Broadway.

Jonny broke into TV with several high profile gigs. Comedy Central's Out On The Edge, hosted by Alan Cumming, brought Jonny's Gay Pimp revue to a national audience. For an entire season Ricki Lake highlighted his comedy and solidified his status as a ghetto superstar. He then appeared on VH1, first being profiled on Totally Gayer, and then starring on My Coolest Years. Jonny then released the smash music video Lookin' Cute/Feelin' Cute. His weekly podcast Gay Pimpin' with Jonny McGovern, is the most popular gay/weekly/comedy show on iTunes.

Jonny continues his gay world domination with This Is NYC Bitch: The East Village Mixtape, which has him producing new artists, including the tranny rap supergroup La'Mady, ball queen MECCA, Peppermint Gummybear, Tranzcore rocker Linda James, and his new side group TEAM PIMP. Along with podcast co-host Martín Beauchamp, he has started a record label, Gay/Nerd Music on which he is releasing his long awaited CD Gays Gone Wild. He is a cast member on The Big Gay Sketch Show produced by Rosie O'Donnell for the LOGO television network.

Jonny will be giving a very affordably-priced solo performance at THE FOOTLIGHT THEATRE on January 23, 2010, where he will combine live singing of some of his greatest hits with his very "Gay Pimp" style of stand up comedy.

'09 FRINGE COMEDY HIT TO BE REMOUNTED IN 2010

In this parody of the hilarious Christopher Guest film Waiting for Guffman, six enthusiastic actors present a show within a show entitled Orlando, Ourlando - a musical tribute to Orlando on the occasion of the city's "quasquadcentennial anniversary" while awaiting the arrival of a "certain critic".

Waiting For Maupin was a huge hit at the 2009 Orlando International Fringe Festival; of that production Orlando Sentinel Staff Writer Matthew J. Palm wrote -

"This gentle spoof is just as funny - maybe funnier - than the 1996 movie that inspired it...a laughable look at pivotal moments in Central Florida history - and the ["certain"] critic is the Sentinel's own Elizabeth Maupin. "She's a wizard," sighs the show's fey director (Kevin Bee, very funny). The cast gives the show its heart, especially Kimberly Shader as the dopey but besotted Mrs. Bloomberg, and Josh Paul as an ex-pole-dancer who never knew his father. The Orlando, Ourlando production numbers put funny twists on the four 2004 hurricanes, the metallic taste of canned orange juice, and a Disney number set to the tune of the old Carousel of Progress theme, "The Best Time of Your Life."

A Note NOT From Wanzie:
by Jeff Kern

Wanzie is busy ringing in the New Year, and since half of Orlando thinks that I am him -- or at least his stunt double -- here's a note of sorts to get you through the week ahead.

2009:  Was it good to you, or is it good riddance?  I think that it's a little of both for me, and I'm honestly looking forward to Twenty-Ten.

If I regularly watched television, I'm sure that I could find a million year-in-reviews of what happened the past 365 days, from Aretha's hat, everyone in the known universe sleeping with Tiger, the passing of celebrities like Michael Jackson, to the always emotional battle over civil rights.

I prefer to think of memories of the past year that have a more profound personal touch to them.   Memories of 2009 for many of the readers of the GRAM might include meeting the amahzing Seth Rudetsky, watching Miss Sammy get roasted, or seeing Barry Miller turn 50 in grand style.  Spending 10 days on the sometimes soggy Green Lawn of Fabulousness was memorable, and meeting Harvey Milk at Come Out with Pride was an experience to not forget.

Three Orlando shows went to New York festivals: My Pal Bette, Dragness of God and the Naked Holy Ghost, and Pie-Face! The Adventures of Anita Bryant.

Wanzie tried to kill someone on Colonial Drive, but brought back Carolina Moon to the Footlight Theatre, portrayed a dramatic, not Pope-bashing role of a Catholic priest in There's No Place Like Home, and made me spit vodka with the recent Wanzie's Glittering A Star-Studded A Christmas Carol.

And ...thinking of the Christmas season that just passed, I will remember this part of Whoopi Goldberg's closing remarks in her presentation of Candlelight at Epcot:

"It doesn't really matter what religion you are, it doesn't matter what you believe, or if you believe, it just matters that it's possible, the possibility of all the things that I was talking about in this is at least enough to gather us some kind of hope.  So, Happy Holidays to Everybody!  Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Ramadan, whatever you are into, Happy Whatever it Is.  God Bless America, and God Bless the World!  So I guess it really is all about Dickens, Tiny Tim, you all know who I'm talking about, not the singer, but the character from Dickens in A Christmas Carol, and he ends it by saying 'God Bless Us, Everyone!'"

Here's to hope for the coming year, Whoopi.  Here's to stopping the bickering over the small stuff and focusing on the big challenges that we all face.  Here's to equality for ALL.  Here's to making and spending time with those we love and care about.

Here's to more plays and productions from the beautiful and talented, albeit twisted sometimes, Michael Wanzie.

Here's to more vodka and less drama!

It's been a great challenge to work with the family behind the GRAM - Gary, Val, Rich, and of course, Wanzie.  I can't wait to see what's next.

I'm not WANZIE, and that's all I wrote!
