Monday Movie Review

Monday, Jan. 23

Wanzie  "Tom Hanks' supporting character was quirky, and not in a good way. Forced. I hated the fact that 9/11 as the cause of his death was completely inconsequential to the story being told. This was NOT a 9/11 story. It was a story about passages and letting go. 9/11 was used superfluously to "get" you. It was transparent and emotionally manipulative. Not impressed."

Triangle Rating Scale
1 - Stinko. Not worth seeing under any circumstances
2 - Below average. Not worth the cost of admission plus the gas to get to the theater. Wait for it to come to cable.
3 - A competent, entertaining film. Nothing extraordinary, but certainly worth the ticket price.
4 - Excellent. Highly recommended.
5 - A Classic! A must-see film that should absolutely be experienced in a proper theater setting.

I totally love this band and the type of music they play, and it's so great to hear a powerful horn section perform live. I fully intend on going to support Soul Funktion on their opening night, TONIGHT, in Winter Park, and would love if some subscriber friends would join me.

Meet Wanzie in the Video bar at the PH TONIGHT for a couple of generously-poured, reasonably-priced, after-work cocktails, along with a couple of rounds of Gidget Galore's always entertaining Big Gay Game Show, before heading over to enjoy Soul Funktion!

From the Dedication of The Church of All Nations

On

Friday, January 20, 2012

At

THE HOLY LAND EXPERIENCE

"Florida's Only Tax Exempt Theme Park"

The understated church lobby:

We love the golden leopard arm rests.

While waiting for the dedication circus to begin, Wanzie leads a brief fireside chat among the faithful, while seated on the steps of the "Altar" just in front of Mother of Pearl Grand Austrian Drape with Gold Fringe.

Doctor Paul Crouch and his wife The Right Reverend Jan Crouch (facing forward) pretend to be on good terms with one another while standing on the altar, which was paid for entirely by donations. Tens of thousands of people are believed to have donated $195.00 or $19,500 each, in accordance with the couples fundraising tactics. One can almost imagine them counting the contributions: "A dollar for the building fund...$194 for our pockets. $500 for the building fund...$19 thousand for our pockets."

Jesus (center, wearing crown and waving to the folks in the cheap seats) Christ dropped in, which seemed to spark a Broadway production number of sorts. People wept openly. We at the WANZeGRAM remain unsure as to whether they just didn't care for the choreography, or if they were really upset that a man who looks 20 years too old for the part is still playing the thirty-something savior of the world, primarily because he's Jan's BFF.

After the dedication, Jesus "Himself" performed baptisms by fountain.

For insurance purposes (lest he drown them), Christ is required by Theme Park execs to squeeze-closed the nose (between his own thumb and finger) of each person He immerses completely under water in the heated pool flanked by dozens of life-size marble statues. We at the WANZeGRAM remain unconvinced this nose squeezing by the Son of God has any origins in The Bible.

Leslie Jordan Returns

With Autobiographical Story-Telling Hilarity

Do gay men become their mothers? That is the question asked in Leslie Jordan's hilarious and touching new romp, Stories I Can't Tell Mama. Jordan travels back in time using show-and-tell to take the audience on the ride of a lifetime. Childhood recollections combine with perilous teenage shenanigans. From the day a teenage Jordan sits down with his poor, clueless mother to inform her that he has decided to forego college to become a female impersonator, all the way to a gay Alaskan cruise on which a 53-year-old Jordan witnesses his aging mother's astounding metamorphosis (and whose only real concern about a gay cruise to Alaska is that she doesn't want to go ice fishing), Jordan is in his element. His storytelling skills abound, and will make for an evening of fun and thought-provoking theater.

Wanzie is sending out this information specifically as a courtesy to subscribers, offering you and your friends the opportunity to snag the very best seats 2 weeks before any publicity goes out to the general public.

The Man in the One Man Show

Jordan stepped off a Greyhound bus in 1982 from the hills of Tennessee, said "hello" to Hollywood, and has never looked back. With hundreds of television shows, films, and commercials to his credit, he has become a familiar face on the entertainment scene. Jordan is the 2006 Emmy® Award-winner for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his delicious portrayal of "Beverley Leslie" on Will and Grace. Audiences will also remember him for his recurring roles on Boston Legal, Ugly Betty, and Reba, and from the feature films as Brother Boy in Sordid Lives (a role he continued in Sordid Lives...the Series on the Logo network), and the recent DreamWorks feature film The Help. On stage Jordan won the Ovation Award, the Garland Award, and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of "Preston Leroy," the aging, sodden barfly in Del Shores hit play Southern Baptist Sissies. His book, "My Trip Down the Pink Carpet" for Simon and Schuster, formed the basis of a 90-minute one-man show, which had a 45-city book signing/performance tour, and a successful 12-week off-Broadway run in 2010.

We've Got Mail

Dear Michael,

Regarding your F.Y.I. in last week's gram ("So what has Obama done..."):

You simply stated the facts, and yet because of the hundreds of millions of dollars already spent to brainwash the average American in an attempt to deny Obama's accomplishments, I suggest your column was brilliant.  Isn't it a shame when presenting facts rises to the level of brilliance?

It's important for us to realize that the bulk of the funds being used in this smear campaign to deny Obama's accomplishments come from the top 1/10th of the top 1% of income earners - the wealthiest of the wealthy - those above the other 99.9% of us. (Now there's a "9-9-9" that is meaningful!) The U.S. Supreme Court helped shepherd this in with their decision that corporations are a person, and thus can enjoy unlimited financial support of political action committees. As if corporations, and their billions of dollars already spent in lobbying, were at a political disadvantage. The facts speak for themselves.  Thank you for your service of presenting them to us. If the WANZeGRAM were required reading for all voters, Obama would be assured a second term.

Jeff Horn

Dear Jeff,

Jeff, you are too kind.

Most of my article was simply a compilation of FACTS that are readily and easily available to anyone who cares to look for them.

I'm glad to know the little bit of effort it took to do so on my part was appreciated, and I can only hope it opened a few eyes to a great many truths about our President, while exposing many a false statement from those who have always opposed him, and who have worked so tenaciously to hopefully cause this President to fail, rather than involving themselves in the process of actually governing.

Thank you for taking the time to write in.

Sincerely,

Wanzie

"Directly following the conclusion of our services, you can be baptized by Jesus Himself in the Baptismal font located just outside the Church. Or, if you don't want to be baptized, you can receive Holy Communion from our other Jesus, who be located at the Last Supper Table just inside the cave on your left."

- Pastor Jan Crouch, speaking at the dedication of THE CHURCH OF ALL NATIONS, at Holy Land Experience, Orlando - Friday, January 20, 2012

"Did you ever notice that the politicians who are fond of saying that they will NEVER apologize for America are usually the very people that we inevitably have to apologize for?"

CHANGE IN IRELAND INCLUDES ACCPETANCE OF GAYS
By Bill Woods

The train from Belfast pulled into the station in Dublin where a group of women passengers were immediately arrested. Their crime? They had brought back condoms in protest of the laws banning the purchase or use of contraceptives in the Republic of Ireland.  The year was 1971.  Some forty years later, Ireland has progressed, not only with regard to contraceptives, but it has officially embraced civil partnerships for couples of the same or opposite sex.

As an American who is about to enter into a civil union with my Irish partner, I wanted to understand how a country that once was so dominated by the influence of the Catholic Church had transformed itself into one of the most progressive members of the European Union.  I wondered if there was hope that the United States might be able to make similar progress to grant full civil rights to my LGBT friends and colleagues.

To understand the changes in Ireland, one has to take note of the various forces at work.  One of the forces is from outside the Republic, the other from within.

While Ireland has a rich history, it is a relatively young republic.  Trust me; you don't want to tell an Irishman that his country is part of the UK!  Ireland obtained complete independence in 1937. In 1973 Ireland became a member of the European Union.  While this union was primarily economic with each member retaining control of their own social laws, the fact that citizens of one member state could travel freely to other member states (like we can travel between US states) meant that pressure for social change was inevitable.  Legislators like David Norris (himself an openly gay man) argued successfully that Ireland must decriminalize homosexual relationships, based on the European Convention on Human Rights that had been enacted by the E.U.

The other force, the one from within, was the loss of respect that life-long Catholics had for their church leaders, who continued to either cover up or downplay the scandals associated with the sexual misconduct of priests.  The Irish population turned a deaf ear to the once influential church, and began to revisit the church teachings on sex.  Many politicians who previously feared voter backlash now began to listen to the demands for equality and respect toward the gay community.

In my next submission to the Gram, I will let the people of Ireland share their thoughts on these civil unions.

Bill Woods is an Orlando businessman of advanced years who came out late in life after having been married and siring children. He has since quickly become an advocate for social change who also supports the arts, is a long-time member of the Orange Blossom Tennis Association, and a once-a-year Pageant Queen (for fundraising purposes), who also served as campaign finance manger during Jeff Horn's bid for City Council. Like his Irish fiancé, Bill enjoys a touch of the spirits now and again, and like a popular Playskool toy, he often wobbles, but he doesn't fall down.

PETA Should Have Chosen People We Would Not Wish to See Naked

By Mike Dorman

"Did you ever wonder why.....?" A few minutes ago I ran across on my MSN home page a Fox (who else?) news link to the PETA ads featuring beautiful young women stripped to the bare essentials with a tag line along these lines; "I'd rather go naked than wear fur." All that immediately came to mind (well, almost all) was "Darlin', most of us would rather see you like this than wearing fur!" Now I'm pretty much opposed to the entire PETA agenda once you get past the part we agree on - "Anyone who abuses animals for fun deserves to die a messy and protracted death." Animal abuse is horrid, but sometimes a cheeseburger just works when nothing else will. We evolved with pointed canines for a reason. Having said that, I still would propose that if PETA really wanted our attention to their cause, they should use persons in their ads who we don't EVER want to see naked (a list follows). Proposed bare it all singles and couples for PETA fur ads: Newt Gingrich and Aretha Franklin, Newman from the Seinfeld show, Liza Minelli, Ron Paul, the Shave Ice truck guy from Hawaii Five-0, Nancy Reagan, and of course, me.

Mike Dorman is a retired Orange County School (History) Teacher who previously served as a career officer (submarines) in the United States Navy. Mike has since retired to The Villages, where he obviously has too much free time on his hands. He agreed to be this publication's Global Correspondent, reporting on life in The Villages. Although we have received several mini-rants (such as this one you are now reading) from our subscriber friend, he has yet to turn in the Global Correspondent content he was asked (and which he agreed) to submit.

In the meantime, this very weekend, I'll be making my Opera debut. What with my recent stellar appearance in The Nutcracker with Orlando Ballet, it was only a matter of time before Florida Opera Theatre came calling.

"We're pleased to be able to bring the dreams of opera fans to fruition," said Florida Opera Theatre president Judy Lee.

We at the WANZeGRAM feel certain that when Ms. Lee speaks of the fulfilling the dreams of Florida Opera fans, she must surely be eluding to their fervent desire to finally see me in an Opera.

Speaking on behalf of FOT, Lee goes on to explain that because of my pivotal role in their upcoming production of The Barber of Seville, "...our second production will be as beautiful-if not more so-than the first."

Joining me on stage at the Valencia East Campus Performing Arts Center will be a few people who likely are not nearly as well known as myself, but you must bear in mind, Barber is only the second staged production by this fairly recently formed Opera company under the Artistic Direction of WANZeGRAM subscriber Frank McClain, and Musical Director/Chorus Master Robin Stamper:

Cast members (Left to Right) David Salisbury Fry as Basilio, Kenneth Mattice as Figaro, and Candice Hoyes as Rosina.

The productions will starrenowned tenor Luigi Boccia as Count Almaviva. Boccia was described in The Metropolitan Opera Guild's Opera News as "an uncommonly cerebral tenor." He is a versatile recitalist whose range spans florid Handel arias to the romantic outpourings of Italian and Neapolitan song. Also joining Wanzie on stage will be veteran of The Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera, David Salsbery Fry, who plays Basilio.

Remember this WANZIE-centric Opera will enjoy only one Orlando presentation; this Sunday, January 29th at 2 PM. To make reservations, it's quick and easiest by logging on to:

www.FLOperaTheatre.org

Tonight I'm playing a round or two of Gigdet's Big Gay Game Show at the PH, and then over to see Soul Funktion at Dexter's in Winter Park, if anyone cares to join me.

Saturday I will be back for a fourth time to see Little Miss Parliament. It's just that funny, and you need to come see it more than once.
