Dear
WANZeGRAM Reader,
|
|
Good Morning!
Are you having fun
yet? I am. Val Bungart, here. With "Punxutawney"
Wanzie tucked away in a secluded spot
(if he doesn't see his shadow, we'll
have a new Wanzie-penned play to enjoy
in under six weeks!), I've been asked to
compose the Greeting for this week's
WANZeGRAM. Fun for me, because as the
editor of said GRAM, I'm typically
adding commas, deleting hyphens, and
attempting to ascertain which - if any -
of the three ways Wanzie spelled the
same word is the correct spelling.
Instead I have the opportunity to
compose complete sentences! So yes, I'm
having fun.

But what will YOU
do to have some fun today? Or will you
have fun? We certainly hope so because
a day without fun is, well, no fun at
all...
We challenge you
to smile, laugh, giggle, guffaw, relax,
and simply have fun. Here are a few
fun-seeking suggestions:
Purchase a bottle
of soap bubbles. Find a quiet, sunny
spot so you can marvel at the rainbow of
colors in the suds, and bubble away.
Spend a few
minutes watching your pets at play; then
join in their games.
Visit The Weather
Channel's website www.weather.com and
type in Minot, ND. Enjoy the fact that
while we've been having a ridiculously
cold Florida winter, other parts of our
beautiful country have far worse.
Stroll the garden
center of your local home improvement
store. The bounty of branches and buds
and blooms will reaffirm the hope that
Spring is truly around the corner.
Eat breakfast for
dinner. There's something comforting
about feasting on scrambled eggs and
cereal after 6 p.m. Or be the naughty
kid you once were (or wanted to be) and
eat DESSERT for dinner. One caveat:
you cannot feel remorse afterward.
Look at a picture
that makes you smile. Can't find such a
picture? Create your own!
Immediately go to
www.wanzie.com to reserve your seat for
"Waiting For Maupin" playing tomorrow
night and the following Saturday in the
Footlight Theatre. If you have not yet
seen this show, just what are you
waiting for? It's campy. It's cheesy.
It's comical. It's colorfully
creative. It's wild and wacky. You'll
learn historical tidbits about O-Town
you probably don't know/and /or won't
believe. And you'll be reminded just
how crazy but fortunate we are to live
in such a unique little corner of the
world.
Continue to have
fun as you read this installment of the
one and only WANZeGRAM!

Things About Michael Wanzie
You May Not Know |
My
funny anecdote is about Michael's
unwavering faith in new talent.
At the 2009 Fringe, I had mentioned
in passing to Michael that I had
begun work on Halloween: The
Musical. I mentioned that I had
cast a lot of my friends in it, and
I was hoping to get it done in time
for Fringe 2010.
Well, Michael suggests I do the show
at the P House in October to tie in
with all the Halloween festivities.
Hmmm.....write a show and get it
mounted in basically 4 months? Is
this possible?
I agreed with him and continued to
work on it. He then mentioned that
he would like to see a reading of
it. In July.
The 4 months now became 2. Make
that one. It was already the end of
May, and the reading would be July
14th. Six weeks to write the book,
music, and lyrics.
But, under the pressure, I made it
happen, and the show was a huge
success.
Thanks, Michael for the faith! And
here's hoping for another production
soon!

Betsey Maupin
leaves The Orlando Sentinel-
my two cents...
-echoing the commander...happy but
sad....i feel like we have grown up
together. you were one of the very first
people i ever waited on at a restaurant
in nyc with a grad degree in my back
pocket. i was humbled and excited about
the great things to come for us....that
was a decade and a half ago! you first
reviewed a production i was in back in
1983! 27 years ago!!!!
-you gave the BEST review to any play i
have ever been a part of....your first
line...
"A Bomb Has Fallen!" still makes me
crack up to this day!
-you have taught me (US) how to believe
in my (OUR) instincts! you have been
(OUR) my biggest cheerleader and (OUR)
my harshest critic.
-you turned me on to the BEST vietnamese
restaurant in town and you always made
me feel lucky to be part of a community!
you are the only person who has been
part of every application i have ever
filled out from jobs to grants to school
applications.
-you have always been there for US! for
me...for that i thank you!
-can't wait to see what the future
brings you, and when it brings you to us
again!
-thanks for reminding us that we are
magicians, betsey! paul wegman's last
words to me were, "Go Out There And Make
Magic!"
-thanks for always being there whenever
we wanted to share!
drew sizemore-
Thank you, Elizabeth, for all you have
done for our community. You will be
sorely missed. How appropriate that your
last day at the Sentinel is followed by
closing night of a play named after you!
I guess we'll all be "Waiting for
Maupin" for a long time! Enjoy the next
chapter of your life.
john dehaas-
Please keep your blog going if at all
possible! Your insight into theatre -
not just in Orlando but everywhere - has
been much appreciated and needed.
Thank you for your many, many years of
service to the arts community, and best
of luck in your new endeavors. Hope to
see you around town!!
Dear Elizabeth, Amidst the sea of words
that will undoubtedly be written on the
enormity of how you have shaped our
theater community, here is a collection
of words about how you have shaped so
much of my life: In High School, you
introduced me to what a reviewer was and
taught me words I did not know...I had
to look things up in the
dictionary...actually, I'm still doing
this. In Undergrad, you encouraged me as
an actor and inspired me to stay the
course in this business. In Grad School,
you expanded my horizons as a Director
and challenged me to try harder. You
have written my first review, and my
last to date. You have written my
"worst" review, which made my "best"
mean that much more when you wrote that
as well. You have made me question,
seek, ponder, laugh, cry, and rejoice!
You have given advice...honestly and
asked nothing in return. You showed up
and watched...all along the way. You
taught me when to use caps and when to
NOT! (david lee still does not
understand this.) Thank you for all of
these things...and for all the larger
things that trickle out as the lens
zooms away from me and swoops out over
the entirety of your affect...your
molding, that whether by default or
design was always at work in our lives.
I look forward to all that is ahead for
you...and all the words you will still
have me looking up in the dictionary!
Much Artist Love & Appreciation,
Aradhana Tiwari
ron legler....(aka "pussy") Ok... I am
such a dork because I am sitting at home
crying, as I try to figure out exactly
why I realized for the past ten years
you have challenged me and others to
make this a better place for the Arts.
First you got me at Orlando Broadway,
then the Performing Arts Alliance, then
through Fringe, DAD, and DPAC. Sometimes
you would write something that would
make me angry, sometimes inspired, but
always a challenge that I couldn't
refuse. Your words became my charge for
action. Thanks for that; you made me a
better person and a better Arts leader.
Thanks for never giving up on me, and
dreaming big right next to me.
phillip nolen-Thanks, Betsy, for doing
so much to generate interest in the good
(and bad) in Orlando arts! If you will
permit a middle-aged white man to say
it: You go, girl.
Dear Betsey,
Nothing less than a seismic shift. Geez!
And congratulations, too.
You've always conjured the magic, and
when the tricks were a bit tattered and
torn, you were willing to endow them
with your gentle faith. "A veritable
conduit to Mt. Olympus" is how you
praised that horrible pole at the old
Tropical Theatre during our ambitious
beach-side production of Phaedra.
Golly, we've all been so lucky to have
these years together. Thanks for being a
collaborator in the continuing invention
of our theatre community and for
prodding our sometimes hesitant audience
to taste the strong flavors. I am, and
will always be, your abiding fan.
Love, Peg
Bets, I always knew you'd amount to
something - enjoy this next
chapter.-Addison Maupin (older brother)
becky fisher...This news is bittersweet.
As a theatre community, we have been
blessed to have a critic who cares about
us and theatre as a whole. We have been
lucky to have a theatre critic who is
smart and a good writer. When I was
first doing theatre with the Per4mants
in the early 90's, we would recite aloud
your witty comments, whether positive or
negative. I will always remember "a late
night fit of artistic frenzy..." That
quip was both funny and accurate! My
favorite review you ever wrote about me
was for my performance in "Me And
Jezebel." I still have my original copy
and will keep it always. I am happy that
you are able to pursue other goals and
have more freedom to do as you please.
You deserve that freedom! I am happy to
know you are not leaving Orlando. Much
love and continued success!
Bestey, we will miss you and can't wait
to critique your pottery on public
blogs, and to see what John Didonna has
to say about them!
my final 2 cents
i met michael wanzie 28 years ago this
coming summer! i love you! you have
changed my life in so many wonderful
ways. thanks for all you do! thanks for
keeping your family close. thanks for
being so incredibly supportive. it's
people like you and kenny and barry and
becky and joe and sammy and doug and
margaret and bestey maupin and the
entire orlando community who used to
make me cry myself to sleep at night in
NYC because i was soooooooooooo missing
the often overlooked and undervalued
thing called COMMUNITY!
stop killing our kids and let us adopt
yours! it would be a better world!
that's my two
cents and i'm jus sayin!!!

A Note From John Sullivan:
|
|
As many of you already
know, Wanzie is taking a break from his
WANZeGRAM duties this week as he sequesters
himself to a hotel room for three days to
write a play. We will all have the chance to
see the fruits of his labor next month when
the play has its world premiere in the
Footlight Theatre at the Parliament House.
When Wanzie asked me to fill in for him and
write his Note From portion of the gram, I
was more than happy to pitch in and do my
part for the sake of art. A few hours later,
after it had sunk in, I was asking myself
what I had gotten myself into? How could
anything I write even compare to what his
readers get from him each week?
That's when I saw the light. I can do this.
Because he asked me to and because it is
just one more thing on a long list of things
that I can accomplish because of friends in
my life like Wanzie. Friends that encourage
me, challenge me and, most importantly, lead
by example.
I decided to write about Wanzie. How we met,
the impact he has had on my life, and what
keeps us all coming back for more. After
all, he is the reason that we are all here.
And because the only thing that he likes
more than tooting his own horn is tooting
the horn of someone else, I give you A Note
About Wanzie...
I first met Wanzie way
back in 1993. My friend Mitch Calhoun wrote,
directed, starred in, and created the art
for SEX PAINT, a performance art show about
art, sex, and censorship. I was in town from
Tampa Bay for a few days to help Mitch out
by shooting the video footage he needed for
the show. We spent the better part of two
days shooting in and around Theatre
Downtown, on rooftops, sides of streets, and
anywhere else we could get away with our
guerilla-style filmmaking.
On the second day of shooting we suddenly
found ourselves with a few hours of downtime
while we were made to wait for something.
The arrival of actors , maybe? So I decided
to curl up and take a nap on one of the bunk
beds being used as part of a set for some
play the theater was doing.
My cat-nap was
interrupted a short while later when I awoke
to the feeling of many hands rubbing my
crotch through my Levis.
"Could I be dreaming," I thought as I tried
to open my eyes and focus on what was
happening to me.
"Just undo the
buttons," a strange but unique voice was
instructing. "Rub it, rub it!"
My eyes opened to find two of the show's
actors, Disney Dancers by day, rubbing me
while a portly man was trying to figure out
how to turn on my video camera. I
immediately sat up on the bunk, pushed the
pretty hands away and the sleep clouds from
my head.
I instructed the guy with my camera to put
it down. He didn't know what he was doing
and it was a very expensive piece of
equipment. He handed me my camera and stuck
out his hand.
"Hi, I'm Wanzie."
Come to find out, Wanzie was producing the
show (along with Margaret Nolan) and they
had been having a hard time finding someone
to willingly put a condom on their hard
penis while on video. So they decided to try
their luck on a sleeping videographer.
Now, depending on when you ask him, Wanzie
may or may not recall the preceding events
exactly as I do. Regardless, that is my
recollection of the first time I laid eyes
on Wanzie. Other than an opening night after
party for the show that I believe was held
at Wanzie's then apartment, it would be
years before our paths crossed again.
Flash forward to Wanzie's production of
Carolina Moon starring him and Tommy Wooten
and directed by Kenny Howard. I was going to
write a piece for Watermark on the show so,
Wanzie invited me to join him and Kenny in
the Footlight Theatre Lounge for some face
time.
Wanzie and I had reconnected long before
this meeting at various community events,
but I remember this as the day when I
started feeling a connection, a kinship
even, with Wanzie. It was also the first
time that I really started to get to know
Kenny Howard. We did the interview and then
decided to sit and drink and talk for hours.
By the end of it we had bonded over such
things as our shared contempt for organized
religion (Michael and me), a love for the TV
show Fame (Kenny and me), and an undying and
almost lifelong affinity for all things
Broadway (all three of us).
Michael and I also discovered that we were
both New England boys at heart and that both
of us had aunts in Connecticut with a
connection to Katharine Hepburn (the only
celebrity that I love more than Cyndi
Lauper). What more could I ask for in a
friend?
Today I consider Michael and Kenny brothers
of mine in this offbeat family that many of
us seem to have formed. Through Wanzie I
have come to meet and know incredible people
like Kenny and Barry, David Lee, Monique and
Tom, the Fisher-Swanberg clan, Doug, Val and
Gary, Don and Susan and so, so many more.
My life is fuller, richer and way more
interesting with Wanzie in it, and I want to
say Thank You. For constantly been a
sounding board for my ideas and my
frustrations. For teaching me, through
example, the importance of being charitable.
For entertaining me with funny stories,
juicy gossip, movie reviews, and some of the
most touching theatre I have ever
experienced. For having a giving and loving
heart even when it may be hard to do so. For
standing up for yourself and others no
matter the foe, be they religious leaders in
need of a calling out, or deranged and
publicly drunk elected officials. For
sending work my way and feeding me great
ideas for articles. For being an advocate
for Queer youth. For being you. For having
such a wonderful sister and a wonderful
niece who I would be glad to call family.
Three years ago I got
the urge to produce and co-write a Fringe
show that would benefit GLBT youth. Wanzie
was one of the first people that I shared my
idea with, and he was encouraging from the
start. I co-wrote and produced Suitcase of
Memories and High School Queerbook for the
Fringe Festival, and both were financial and
critical successes. I don't think I could
have pulled it off without the help of
Wanzie and the people that I have come to
know through him. He really rocks.
Seriously.
This year at the Orlando Fringe Festival I
am teaming up with Barry and Kenny and
Michael to produce a show that has the
potential to raise thousands of dollars for
GLBT youth in Orlando. Let's Make A Gay
Deal will have seven performances in the
Orange Venue this May, and I would not have
had the faith in myself to pull this off if
not for Michael Wanzie and the incredible
people I have come to know through him.
Having watched Wanzie, Kenny, and so many
others put on countless shows over the years
has given me the courage to try things that
I might not normally do.
So thank you Michael Wanzie, Kenny Howard,
Barry Miller, and all the rest of you
inspiring folk who have made our life in
Orlando a better one.
I haven't had this much fun since grandma
died. Really!
You think I'm kidding?
