Dear
WANZeGRAM Reader,
|
"Just like the baby's first few steps...

...the world grows
wider with the quest" - Michael Wanzie,
Lyrics from the Charron/Wanzie musical
LIZZIE
Good morning!
We at the WANZeGRAM
wish to remind you that the world is a great
big wonderful place with fantastic things to
discover and marvelous people to get to
know. The more you venture out into the
world and drink it in, the more you yourself
grow.
As Mark Twain once
said, "Travel
is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and
narrow-mindedness, and many of our people
need it sorely on these accounts. Broad,
wholesome, charitable views of men and
things cannot be acquired by vegetating in
one little corner of the earth all one's
lifetime."
If you lack the means
to travel the world as certain Mike &
Eddie's do, then at least make the time to
tune in to the Travel Channel, or go drink
around the world at Epcot.
A short day trip to
St. Cloud or a visit to old downtown Winter
Garden can make you feel like you're in
another world.
Of course you can
always simply go to the Parliament House on
Saturday, March 6 to celebrate Wanzie's
birthday (6:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the piano
bar), and partake of the Mardi Gras
celebration. If you drink a great deal and
squint your eyes a lot as the golf carts and
drag queens parade by, you'll think you're
actually in New Orleans!
Have a wonderful
weekend!
We hope you enjoy your
WANZeGRAM
The Entire
Minion Staff of the WANZeGRAM would
like to wish our benevolent, all
powerful, spiritual leader a very
happy
53rd birthday!

Helsinger will talk to actor Philip

Play Fest:
Wanzie will once
again be a participating playwright in
PLAY IN A DAY 2010, and will also
be performing as the title character
from the film Citizen Kane in a
reading of CITIZEN EVE
under the direction of Kenny
Howard. In this fascinating play
centered around the writing of the film
All About Eve, Orlando actress
and WANZeGRAM fave Becky Fisher
will once again assume the persona of
Bette Davis, which she so amazingly
embodied in the critically acclaimed
Me And Jezebel for which
Fisher won The Lillie Stoates Award for
Best Performance by an Actress in the
1997 Orlando theatrical season. Other
familiar actors appearing in CITIZEN
EVE include Becky's own husband and
gifted performer in his own right,
Joe Swanberg, the fabulous Frank
McClain, the talented Alan Finic,
luscious newcomer Michael Ealy,
brassy and sassy Meagan Maroney,
the always delectable Heather
Leonardi, and sultry Katherine
Skelton in the role of Marilyn
Monroe!
Clearly CITIZEN
EVE is not to be missed.
Another top of the
list event will be the fully staged
production of SHOTGUN
under the direction of David Lee,
for which there is a special WANZeGRAM
outing planned for Thursday, April 1,
2010.
This griping
post-Katrina play, set in New Orleans,
will feature Dennis Neal, Barry
White, Brandon Rogers, Chantal
Jean-Pierre, and one of Orlando's
finest acting talents, Russ
Blackwell.

WORKSHOP:
HEAVIER THAN
By Steven
Christopher Yockey
Directed by
Patrick Flick
This mash-up of
Greek myths unfolds inside a sprawling
labyrinth where Aster the Minotaur
contemplates turning 30 and pines for
his long-absent mother while navigating
a deceptive chorus, a plotting sister,
a masochistic, sexually obsessed boy
with wings, and the impending
arrival of warriors out for blood.
READINGS:
THE WEIRD SISTERS
By Zack Calhoon
Directed by
Patrick Braillard
Muriel, Seonaid,
and Rhoswen, three women rebuked and
thwarted by Duncan's diseased Scottish
government, are brought together by
need, by revenge, and by design. Meet
the witches of Shakespeare's Macbeth in
Zack Calhoon's prequel, THE WEIRD
SISTERS, before they took their
revenge; before they cast
their first spell.
GLASSHEART
By Reina Hardy
Sponsored by
Women Playwrights' Initiative
Directed by
Robin Olson
It's Beauty and
the Beast. But Beauty never showed
up. After centuries under the curse, the
Beast and his last servant move into a
shabby Chicago apartment. In the world
of paying rent and taking public
transportation, is a happy ending even
possible?
ONCE A MARINE
By Kelly Younger
Directed by
Richard Perez
A shell-shocked
marine returns home with no recollection
of the life, or the wife, he left
behind. The only woman he does remember
the one he came back for is his
first love of fifteen years ago. His
bittersweet homecoming rekindles that
love, and dredges up his most painful of
memories. He must choose a future of
blissful ignorance, or a past of buried
grief. But he is not the one who will
decide.
CITIZEN EVE
By Scott Bibb &
Jerry Rice
Directed by
Kenny Howard
The witches from
Macbeth reveal their show-biz
connections in this irresistible brew of
uproarious comedy, fearless
imagination, Hollywood nostalgia,
and all-too-human desires. It's 1950 and
Joe Mankiewicz is toiling and troubling
over the script of All About Eve.
Enter the supernatural, and
things get even bumpier. Enter Bette
Davis, and, well...fasten your seat
belt!
TIME IN KAFTA
By Len Jenkin
Directed by
David Lee
A manic recently
ex-assistant professor at a small
college, his loving wife, Franz Kafka, a
European sanatorium, two mercurial
con-people, and a time-slip -- the
present sliding away to 1913...trains,
bars, airplanes, poisoned sausage,
The Trial....a fable, a quixotic
journey, and a determined yet demented
quest for one man's own truths.
VINO VERITAS
By David MacGregor
Presented by
Orlando Theatre Project
On Halloween night
two couples prepare to attend an annual
costume party. Though the evening begins
as usual, familiar traditions unravel
when the foursome shares a bottle of
South American ceremonial wine made from
the skin of blue dart tree frogs. Under
the influence of this tribal truth
serum, what follows is an unpredictable
night of unbridled honesty that
stretches the bounds of their friendship
forever.
DAEDALUS
By David Davalos
Directed by
Kate Ingram
The London Times,
January 27, 2010: "Scientists Want to
Exhume Leonardo da Vinci to Solve Mona
Lisa Mystery." But why go to all
that trouble when you can just see David
Davalos' play, Daedalus, for the
shocking and funny answer? And meet
Machiavelli and the Borgias, as well as
go for a ride on a 16th-century flying
machine, to boot...
NIGHT BLOOMS
By Margaret
Baldwin
Directed by
Laurel Clark
Two families one
white and one black cope with change
in Selma in 1965. On the day of the
march, the Stafford household laughs,
cries, celebrates a bloom, and waits for
news when an unexpected freedom fighter
appears on their doorstep. A moving
story of ordinary people and
extraordinary change.
THE TRUTH WILL OUT
By Jordan Seavey
Directed by
John DiDonna
In The Truth Will
Out, an allegedly closeted national news
anchor is confronted and threatened by
the accused killer of an African
American gay teenage boy. Tina
Turner, Ellen Degeneres, Edward R.
Murrow, and Katherine the Great
collide with the theatrical
doppelgangers of a famous news anchor
(dare we presume the character might be
inspired by Anderson Cooper? We
at the WANZeGRAM sure think so) and his
high society mother in a play that dares
to tackle a recent national tragedy
while asking some dangerous questions
about human behavior and basic human
rights.

New Wanzie Comedy
Opens March 13 / Tickets Now On Sale! |
|
Wanzie continues the Ladies of Eola
Heights Saga
With His Newest Orlando-Based Play:
55
WEST
A High Rise
Church Street Comedy
Our resident Playwright
Michael Wanzie will once again take
to the stage as Pearl Locksdale, along with
Frank McClain as Physiatrist Dr.
Robert Burroughs, and Miss Sammy
playing herself, in 55 WEST: A High Rise
Church Street Comedy opening on
Saturday, March 13, at the Footlight
Theatre.
In this, his third
sequel to the original Ladies of Eola
Heights (which broke all box office
records at the 170 seat Footlight Theatre
during its unprecedented 9-month run in
2005), Wanzie pares the cast down to 3
onstage performers as the action of this
installment moves from the old clapboard
house on Cathcart Street to Orlando's newest
condo tower located at 55 West Church
Street.
In this new
stand-alone comedy (which can be enjoyed
whether or not theater-goers are familiar
with the previous 3 plays), Pearl can see a
lot through her binoculars from her
high-rise patio perch!
It seems the Ladies
have taken the advice of their psychiatrist
(COURT ORDERED THERAPY: Ladies of Eola
Heights Part 3) and have sold the old
family home. However, brother Jackson is
dead, sister Ruby has gone to New York to
seek fame and fortune on the Great White
Way, and sister Opal is off on her
doctor-prescribed cruise. Thus Pearl has had
to make the move into the family's new
Church Street digs on her own. The good
doctor (now Ruby's husband) has moved in to
keep Pearl company until the return of her
siblings. The two soon discover that Pearl's
penchant for getting others to drink along
with her is no match for the doctor's need
to preserve client-patient confidentiality.
Orlando notables
ranging from Theater Critic and Arts Blogger
Elizabeth Maupin to Orlando City
Commissioner Daisy Lynum; from
Realtor ® David Dorman to columnist
Billy Manes, along with many other
familiar people and Orlando locales all
figure into the dialogue and laughs in this
2-person, hi-camp comedy punctuated with
novelty lip-sync routines performed by
Orlando's most widely recognizable drag
persona Miss Sammy. (You can't go anywhere
they serve liquor without running into her!)
The play will be
staged by Wanzie Presents' Artistic Director
Kenny Howard.
55 WEST: A High Rise Church Street Comedy
will be presented Saturday evenings only,
March 13 through April 3, 2010. Tickets
($12) go on sale today, Friday, February 27,
2010, exclusively through the WANZIE.com
online box office.
Opening night tickets

Master Hypnotist Jon
Simon Returns to PH for Mardi Gras! |
|
In
the spirit of Mardi Gras and the
mystique of old New Orleans' Voo Doo,
Wanzie Presents is pleased to announce a
command performance by Master Hypnotist
Jon Simon as the perfect complement to
the Parliament House's Annual Mardi Gras
Party & Parade.
Master Simon
transfixed and delighted audiences when
he made his Parliament House debut 3
years ago. Since then he has performed
at fairs and festivals virtually
everywhere, and specifically for gay
audiences at Pride South in Fort
Lauderdale and First Coast Pride in
Jacksonville. He has also appeared at
Wild Adventures Theme Park in Georgia,
and is a favorite on the college campus
entertainment circuit.
Tickets to this comedic and entrancing
show, which is being presented on
Saturday, March 6, are priced at only
$10, so it's a no-brainer to make the
happy decision to come out early that
night to see the 8 PM hypnotism, if
indeed you were planning on attending
the Mardi Gras Party and Parade that
same evening, anyway. The ticket price
for the comedy Hypnosis show includes
complementary cover for the rest of the
evening. Since the cover for Mardi Gras
is also $10, it's like getting the
Hypnosis show absolutely FREE!
Your ticket purchase for the Hypnosis
Show Includes Mardi Gras!
During the show, volunteers are selected
from the audience and become the
hypnotist's subjects; many, of whom,
will indeed find themselves under the
Master's Control.

As Simon Sez, you
may "See the show, or BE the show!" The
Master goes on to remind us, "If you
volunteer, please be warned: what you
don't remember, your friends will never
forget!"
Wanzie (who was born on March 6) will be
in attendance as part of his official
53rd birthday celebration. Come out and
join Wanzie and the entire WANZeGRAM
staff for this most entertaining evening
of hypnotic entertainment!

A Note From Wanzie:
|
It has occurred to me that those of
us born gay are very fortunate.
I've spent half my adult lifetime
listening to experts on talk shows
carry on about how fundamentally
different the male psyche is from
that of the female.
Scores
of books such as "Men are from Mars,
Women are from Venus" have been
written to illustrate the myriad of
reasons why men and women don't
communicate well, agree on very
little, and want entirely different
things from a relationship.
Scientists and neurological
researchers have discovered and
offer documented proof that the male
and female brains operate on
completely different planes and in
completely disparaging ways with
regards to how each gender processes
information, feels emotion, and
quantifies love.
All the jokes that have been bandied
about for hundreds of years
illuminating the differences between
men and women - their very different
needs - their vastly contrasting
ways of discerning what constitutes
intimacy, how respect is manifested,
and what does or does not require
time and examination and work in a
relationship - all of this stuff of
stand up comedians is all now
indisputably substantiated by
science as being rooted in
physiology and chromosomes.
It seems that when it comes to
straight people, the only thing they
truly have in common is their
attraction to the opposite sex, and
almost nothing else what so ever.
What a blessing it is to have been
born with a same-sex attraction. Our
minds work similarly. For the most
part we want the exact same things
out of a relationship. We know how
to communicate with one another and
how to anticipate one another's
needs because they are as our own.
We are not from different planets.
We are not different genders. And we
know exactly how to please our
partners in bed because we have all
the exact same parts.
I feel so sorry for straight people
and the seemingly insurmountable
problems they endure trying against
all odds to be so unnaturally
together as one. It's no wonder 50%
of all their fragile marriages end
in divorce. Absolutely nothing about
men and women, other than their
sexual organs, really seem to fit
together. Poor breeders.
How blessed are we who are gay?
Very blessed, me thinks.

PS - Come to my birthday party.
I am turning 53 years tomorrow -
March 6. I'm making and bringing
some party platters to the Footlight
Lounge to share with friends prior
to the Jon Simon Comedy Hypnotist
show. Come and have a little nosh
with me. If you have a specialty
item you might like to contribute to
the buffet, feel free to do so, but
absolutely NO GIFTS PLEASE. And of
course there'll be birthday cake.
What I really would like for my
birthday is for my friends to
acquire tickets to see the Hypnosis
Show along with me, and to volunteer
to be hypnotized for my personal
enjoyment. That's what I really want
for my birthday. And John Sullivan
will video tape the show. We'll have
a viewing party at a later date, so
if you end up in the show and fall
under hypnosis, you will still be
able to see the show. B-day party is
6:30 - 7:30 PM on Saturday, March 6th,
in the piano lounge adjacent to the
theater. Hypnosis show is at 8 PM.
