Dear WANZeGRAM Fan,
|
|
"Hello."
"So last night a trannie stole my
shrimp."
Those are the first two lines spoken in
a staged phone conversation in the
opening scene of the Broadway show
entitled - [title of show].
Today is an exciting day in the lives of
Kenny Howard, Michael Wanzie, and John
B. deHaas; today is the day we can
officially announce that WANZIE PRESENTS
will be producing [title of show] -
directed by Kenny, Musical directed by
John, produced and choreographed by
Wanzie.
If the excitement of this creative
threesome over acquiring the rights to
[title of show] means nothing to you,
then do scroll down to A Note From
Wanzie and get all the background and
detail.
If you do know what this means, and are
duly excited by the announcement, by all
means scroll down to the A Note From
Wanzie and get the details.
And if you're a musical theater
performer between the ages of 25 and 35,
and would like to audition to be in
[title of show], we invite you to check
out the audition notice in The World In
Brief section of this edition of your
WANZeGRAM.
To continue the phone conversation from
above, from the opening of [title of
show]:
"What are you talking about?"
"I was eating outside in Chelsea at
Seafood Mare or Mer, however you say it,
and this drugged-out trannie staggers
over and grabs the shrimp off my plate."
How could you not be immediately
drawn-in by a musical whose opening
lines are about a drugged-out trannie
stealing shrimp from an unsuspecting
sidewalk café patron?
We at the WANZeGRAM World Headquarters
are drawn in by it.
We hope you will be as well.
Have a drugged-out trannie-free morning!
(Mind your shrimp)

Sing-A-Long SOUND OF MUSIC Event at
CityWalk Cineplex |
|
The Orlando chapter of The Sisters of
Perpetual Indulgence will host a Sound of
Music Sing-a-Long at the AMC Multiplex
Cinema, located at Universal Citywalk, on
Friday, April 30th, and Saturday,
May 1.
If
you've never before attended an interactive
Sound of Music screening, we at the
WANZeGRAM are here to tell you it's a hoot.
The lyrics to every song roll across the
screen in subtitle fashion, and the entire
audience sings along to each and every
Rogers and Hamerstein song in the film.
Basically, this is Rich Charron's idea of
hell; Kenny Howard's heaven on earth.
During the non-musical portions of the film,
audience members are allowed (at some
screenings, even encouraged) to talk during
the film. Not to one another, or in
conversation, but rather to share aloud your
color commentary, should you choose to
provide one from time to time. In other
words, if you have a snarky remark to make
about something "happening" on the screen,
you are not meant to keep it to yourself.
Shout it out, Louise! This often becomes a
one-up-manship contest of wits that can
prove quite entertaining. To further the
Rocky Horror Picture Show-esque feel of the
proceedings, the Orlando Sisters will be
handing out Audience Participation Kits
(included in the $12 admission price), and
attendees will be prompted as to the when
and the how of it all.
Attendees
are encouraged to dress up in costumes, such
as nuns, Von Trap Family Singers, or "brown
paper packages," and other creative things
from the movie. Prizes will be awarded for
the best costumes.
100 percent of the profits from this
screening will benefit the good works of the
recently sanctified Orlando Chapter of this
most benevolent Order of cross-dressing
nuns.

The
Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence |
|
The "Orlando Sisters" are an order of
Post-Modern (some bearded) Nuns who were
happy to explain to the WANZeGRAM they
are "dedicated to the promulgation of
omniversal joy, and the expiration of
stigmatic guilt. We work to raise money
for charitable organizations, fight for
queer rights and visibility, do safer
sex outreach, bring joy and unity to our
community, and strive diligently to keep
our sense of humor."
The Orlando
Sisters are part of the world-wide order
known as
THE SISTERS OF
PERPETUAL INDULGENCE.
The organization is a leading edge Order of
Queer Nuns who first appeared in San
Francisco on Easter Sunday in 1979. Since
that time, officially sanctioned Orders have
been established across the nation, and
around the world. The Orlando order is among
the most recent to be officially recognized
by the founding group.
The
world over, The Sisters have devoted
themselves to community service, ministry,
and outreach to those on the edges, and to
promoting human rights and respect for
diversity. The Sisters of Perpetual
Indulgence believe all people have a right
to express their unique joy and beauty, and
the good Sisters use humor and irreverent
wit to expose the forces of bigotry,
complacency, and guilt that claim the human
spirit. The Sisters have raised and donated
over $1 million dollars to charitable causes
relevant to the pursuit of equal rights and
fair treatment (medical and otherwise) for
all people.
The Sound of
Music Sing-A-Long marks the first major
fundraising event by our local Orlando
chapter of The Sisters of Perpetual
Indulgence.

local nuns, or for more information on how
you may join the Orlando Sisters and their
Order at The Abbey of St. Gertrude de
Nevlles, simply log onto

meantime, make plans to support your local
cross-dressing nuns by attending one of the
two interactive Sound of Music events, and

We've Got Mail!

Dear WANZeGRAM Staff,
I love everything about the WANZeGRAM,
and look forward to it every week. Just
a suggestion, though: could you make the
pictures that are featured so that you
can click on them and they get bigger? I
am old now, and cannot see as well as I
once did, and so many of the people
pictured in the shot are so attractive.
That Wanzie has some beautiful friends!
Please take your older subscribers into
account, and make this simple upgrade.

Doug Ba'aser
Member in good standing -- AARP
Dear Mr.
Ba'aser
Some of the photos come into
WANZeGRAM World Headquarters in a
resolution large enough that this
would be possible...but most photos
do not. If we tried to do that with
those photos, they would become
pixilated and not worth the time to
download. ALSO...doing so would add
significantly more time to preparing
the WANZeGRAM on weeks when it is
chock full of photos.
So, I guess the short answer
is...maybe...sometimes.
May I suggest glasses?

Lend Me A Tenor
Theatre Downtown
production of the Tony Award-winning Ken
Ludwig comedy under the direction of
Frank Hilgenberg. Set in 1934, this
farce revolves around renowned tenor
Tito Merelli, who is scheduled to sing
the lead in Otello at a gala fundraiser.
Unfortunately, even before the star
leaves his hotel room, everything begins
to unravel. Chaos ensues when Merelli's
wife, who has mistaken an
autograph-seeker hidden in his closet
for a secret lover, leaves him a "Dear
John" letter. The distraught Merelli,
accidentally over-medicated on
tranquilizers, passes out. The company's
General Manager is determined the show
must go on (for his own financial sake),
and asks his assistant Max to
impersonate the opera star. Max puts on
the blackface makeup required for the
role of Otello, and his disguise
succeeds admirably--until Merelli, also
in blackface, wakes up and heads for the
stage. What follows is a chain-reaction
of mistaken identity, plot twists,
double entendres, innuendoes, and
constant entrances and exits through
many doors. The cast includes Mike
Kendrick, Victora Burns, Sarah
Benz-Phillips, Jackie Prutsman, Larry
Stallings, Adam DelMedico, Will Barbara,
and Cira Larken.

A Note From Wanzie:
|
It's a
great day in the world of WANZIE
PRESENTS.

We can now officially announce that
we have secured the rights to
produce [title of show]; that
is the title of the show - [title
of show] - all lower case
letters, brackets inclusive.
Those subscribers who are entrenched
in the Theatre Scene know what a
fabulously original, smart, and
clever musical this is, and I'm sure
you can appreciate how genuinely
excited Kenny and I are to have the
opportunity to present this
contemporary musical, so soon after
its Broadway run, for our Orlando
audiences at the Footlight Theatre.
Hunter
Bell (Book) was working at his day
job - packing boxes - in New York
City when he received an email from
his friend Jeff Bowen (Music &
Lyrics) telling him of a new musical
theater festival that was accepting
submissions of new works. With three
weeks until the submission deadline,
Hunter and Jeff vowed to write and
create non-stop for three weeks. and
(just as it is represented in the
opening phone call scene in
[title of show]) no matter what
they had, they would put that in an
envelope and submit it. So that's
what they did. They just began to
write. Very early on they found that
what made them think and laugh and
write the most was writing about
writing. So they kept on
writing...and writing...and writing.
Eventually they roped in real-life
friends and fag hags Susan Blackwell
and Heidi Blickenstaff to help
develop the material and join the
cast in which the two lead
characters were already Jeff and
Hunter playing themselves. Susan and
Heidi naturally became central
characters in this play about
writing a play because they were
there while the play was being
written. And when the submission
deadline day arrived, they submitted
what they had.
What they didn't have was a title
for their show about writing a show.
The first blank on the submission
form followed the words - [title of
show]. And thus, that became the
title of their show.
[title of show] was accepted into
the New York Theater Festival's
inaugural season, where commercial
producer Kevin (Rent, Avenue Q,
In The Heights) McCollum took an
interest and guided the show through
its eventual Broadway run at the
historic Lyceum Theatre.
Amid a season of overblown,
over-produced Broadway spectacles
derived mostly from movies and
cartoons, the completely original
[title of show] hit Broadway
with a mere cast of four plus one
onstage pianist. The set consisted
of one piano and four chairs. This
little-show-that-could struck a
common chord with writers, actors,
composers, and musicians all over
the country. It achieved cult status
among creative people from Peoria to
Orlando, and it reminded high tech
Broadway that good theater can be
about so much less than monolithic
sets, architectural costumes,
stairways to the heavens, and
falling chandeliers.
When asked what [title of show]
is about, Hunter Bell is delighted
to quip, "It's about 90 minutes
without an intermission!." Then he
quickly adds, "Actually the answer
we always gave to this question in
interviews and for sound bites and
blurbs when the show was being done
on Broadway was that [title of
show] is an original musical
that chronicles its own journey from
inception to opening night on
Broadway." Bell then goes on to
clarify, "That's the plot answer,
but at its heart, this show is about
four friends. It's about how
friendships are tested and changed
when life happens, when new
opportunities are revealed. It's
about not being afraid to dream out
loud and killing Vampires. It's
about risk, and learning to be true
to yourself and to your
friends...your chosen family. And
it's about ninety minutes, too."
I am delighted to be the hands-on
producer of the Central Florida
Premiere of [title of show],
and equally delighted to announce
the show will be directed by one of
its biggest fans, Kenny Howard, and
that the musical director will be
John B. deHaas. I will also stage
the musical numbers.
Kenny Howard first saw [title of
show] on Broadway during its
first preview performance on July 5,
2008. He so loved the show he
returned to see it two more times.
He so enthusiastically endorsed the
show that many of our mutual friends
such as Rebecca Fisher, Monique
Byrnes, John Sullivan, and David Lee
went to see it, and all came home to
Orlando just as fired up about it as
was Kenny.
Kenny will leave Orlando in June to
spend much of the summer in New York
City directing an evening of short
plays to be presented at the
International CringeFest in late
July and early August. So before he
goes away, we are going to cast
[title of show] here in Orlando,
with auditions slated for Monday,
May 10, at 6:30 PM in the Footlight
Theatre at the Parliament House.
The show will not go into formal
rehearsals until the end of the
summer, but while Kenny is in New
York, the Orlando cast members can
become completely familiar with the
script and score.
[title of show] will open on
Saturday night, October 2, 2010, at
7:30 PM in the Footlight Theatre.
Kenny and John and I are thrilled
about it.
We hope you will be thrilled, as
well.
