Michael,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing the article about the OYA Fringe situation in your latest WANZeGRAM.

As the only OYA board member who stepped down upon the OYA Board's requested resignation of John, I am so glad that John is receiving the appreciation and credit he deserves for all he has done for OYA.  I met John, still in high school, at OYA (which was then called GALIXY).  It was my first time going to group (and meeting gay people, believe it or not), and it was his night at group to volunteer as a facilitator.  John came at a time in my life when my religious upbringing made me not just afraid and ashamed of my homosexuality, but feeling very alone and unwanted.  Over the past decade that I have known John, he became more than just a friend and mentor; he became an important part of my chosen family.  He is, and always will be. the older brother that I never had.

When John asked me to join the board of OYA, I really felt this was my chance to give back to the group that gave and taught me so much. Sadly, as you know, the events that transpired then and now showed me that the adults involved now have very little interest in the well-being and growth of the youth, but rather in collection of donations and "pats on the back" for themselves.  When John was asked to resign from the Board of Directors, there was absolutely no question in my mind - any board that would belittle the value and experience of a person like John (regardless of any disagreements that may occur - which SHOULD happen on a board) CERTAINLY would not value my knowledge or opinion.  Our community is so lucky to have people like John Sullivan, who not only stand up for what is right and good, but are the first ones to put time and energy into getting the job done.  We need more John Sullivans.  We need fewer people hiding behind boards and registered letters -pretending to put their resources to work for the betterment of our community.

Chris Yakubchik

Dear Chris,

Thank you so much for taking to time to share your first-hand knowledge of John Sullivan's dedication and effectiveness with regards to OYA, and specifically to you, as an individual.

I am very pleased to share your letter with our subscribers.

I hope you will consider serving on the board of a newly invigorated OYA.

The board obviously needs people like you.

Best,

WANZIE

Wanzie,

Re: Jen & Rick

You had me ready to donate to these two, who I don't know, but your last tirade about the church was, as usual, in bad taste, and the last straw. You still haven't learned when you go too far. Shame on you.

Sent in by someone who chose not to sign their name

Dear No Name,

Shame on me?

I'm simply a messenger. I didn't go too far. I didn't go far enough. I didn't write what I wrote about the Church for the hell of it. And I didn't write one word that isn't factual. I wrote what I sincerely feel as a result of very real and serious infractions and breeches of faith perpetrated by the church. I am outraged by the Catholic Church.

Shame on me?

Shame on the priests who molested the children. Shame on the church that systematically protected these villains. Shame on the Pope who knew all along and directed the American Catholic Bishops to do all they could to keep these sinful violations of humanity a secret until the statute of limitations ran out; because that's what REALLY happened.

Shame on me?

If speaking and writing the truth, regardless of how unpleasant it may be, is going "too far," then I hope to never "learn" to behave differently.  If calling attention to horrible abuses of power and office is in "bad taste," then I hope never to simply behave in a manner persons such as yourself deem to be in good taste. And may I ask you - just how injurious does the Catholic Church have to become...exactly how many crimes does this institution need be party to, before you decide the Church has played "the last straw?"

Shame on ME?

Shame on YOU for not sharing my outrage!

And shame on you for allowing something I wrote to provide you an excuse for not helping out two completely unrelated people in need.

How very Christian of you.

Sincerely,

Michael Wanzie

Short Takes:

"Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and pedophilia, but many others have shown, I have recently been told, that there IS a relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia."

- Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State

"Liar, liar, vestments on fire."

- Wanzie

"A gracious good afternoon. Have I reached the party to whom I am speaking?"

- Ernestine Tomlin

Regarding HIV/AIDS: During his 2009 visit to Cameroon, a country with an HIV prevalence rate of over 5%: "You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, it increases the problem."

- Pope Benedict XVI

"Benedict XVI is either purposefully ignorant, or is just a flat out liar. Neither is acceptable in a Pope."

- Wanzie

In direct reaction to the Pope's reckless and dangerous assertion that the distribution of condoms as a deterrent to the spread of HIV/AIDS "increases the problem," the following statements were immediately issued:

"His [Pope Benedict XVI] statements could undo years of prevention and awareness, and endanger many lives."

- Ministry of Heath, Belgium

"The Pope's remarks denouncing condom use endanger public health policies and the imperative to protect human life,"

- French Ministry of Health

"It is extremely harmful and very serious that this Pope is forbidding people from protecting themselves...The Pope is out of touch with reality."

- Development Ministry, The Netherlands

"Condoms are a necessary element in prevention policies, and an efficient barrier against the virus."

- Heath Ministry, Spain

"Condoms play a crucial role in fighting HIV...Condoms save lives." -Joint statement issued by

- The German Health Development Ministers

We at the WANZeGRAM could provide dozens more Short Takes from as many different countries rebuking the Pope for his stance against condom use. Curiously, the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Surgeon General of The United States of America, were deafeningly silent in deference to this misguided Pope's continued campaign of misinformation regarding Condoms and HIV.

My Two Cents:

The Catholic Church and Condoms

By Jon O'Brien

The institutional [Catholic] church continually lobbies governments to exclude condom promotion from development aid, and the impact of the Vatican's stance on condom use is far reaching and perilous.  In many countries outside Europe and North America the Catholic Church's teachings can profoundly influence people's behavior, even if following those teachings endangers their health. Ghana, which demonstrates the most support for the Vatican's position, has the highest HIV rate of all the countries surveyed...but efforts have not been limited to the global South.

In 2008, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops successfully used its lobbying power on Capitol Hill to remove family planning from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Provisions in the final PEPFAR bill not only allow faith-based groups to abstain from distributing condoms, but also to refrain from providing referrals to agencies that do. Catholic Relief Services is one of the top recipients of PEPFAR funding: $103 million in 2007. Through its far-reaching programs, the Catholic Church has been able to impose its myopic anti-condom stance on those countries most affected by the HIV epidemic.

In order to stem the national and international impact of the church's teaching on condoms, Catholics for Choice's Condoms4Life campaign provides a vocal counterpoint to the Vatican's stance on condom use. Using the core message

"Good Catholics Use Condoms"

the campaign supports Catholics and non-Catholics in using and promoting the use of these lifesaving and life-affirming devices, and calls on the hierarchy to join others in the active prevention of the spread of HIV throughout the world.

The Catholic hierarchy proclaims its opposition to condom use in the name of the "pro-life" cause. Pope Benedict and the Catholic hierarchy are unable, however, or perhaps unwilling, to acknowledge that condom use is pro-life. From the World Health Organization to the United Nations, experts agree that condom use goes a long way to reducing the transmission of HIV. Not only the experts, but Catholics around the world, agree that condom use as a means to combat HIV is, indeed, pro-life.

Jon O'Brien is the President of Catholics for Choice.

THEATER - Lend Me A Tenor
Theatre Downtown production of the Tony Award-winning Ken Ludwig comedy under the direction of Frank Hilgenberg. Set in 1934, this farce revolves around renowned tenor Tito Merelli, who is scheduled to sing the lead in Otello at a gala fundraiser. Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel. Chaos ensues when Merelli's wife, who has mistaken an autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover, leaves him a "Dear John" letter. The distraught Merelli, accidentally over-medicated on tranquilizers, passes out. The company's General Manager is determined the show must go on (for his own financial sake), and asks his assistant Max to impersonate the opera star. Max puts on the blackface makeup required for the role of Otello, and his disguise succeeds admirably--until Merelli, also in blackface, wakes up and heads for the stage. What follows is a chain-reaction of mistaken identity, plot twists, double entendres, innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors. The cast includes Mike Kendrick, Victora Burns, Sarah Benz-Phillips, Jackie Prutsman, Larry Stallings, Adam DelMedico, Will Barbara, and Cira Larken.

A Note From Wanzie:

So, not only is the Times Square Bomber from my old hometown of Shelton, Connecticut, he actually resided on the street where I grew up  - Long Hill Avenue. The same street where I later returned with Rich Charron to live near the New York commuter rail line while we worked with Scott Schwartz on developing LIZZIE The Musical. We were staying in the apartment above my childhood home - the home where my parents were still residing.

As a matter of fact, I think Rich used to watch Faisal Shahzad come and go from the Cumberland Farms across the street from our house, worried that he was up to something.

I told Rich he was racial profiling.

Who knew?

Shelton is famous for many other things. Not just terrorists.

Shelton is still home of the one and only original Wiffle Ball Factory! Really. It's the original. And it's still the only one. Every Wiffle Ball and Bat sold anywhere in the world comes into the world in Shelton, Connecticut.

Shelton was home to one of the largest arson fires in United States history. In 1975 the Sponge Rubber Products plant (formerly the country's largest B.F. Goodrich tire manufacturing facility, and Shelton's largest employer) was set on fire. The plant has located just down the street from my Dad's tavern - Sylvester's.

Charles Moeller, president of parent company Grand Sheet Metal Products, was acquitted on arson charges, but the jury, in a 1978 civil lawsuit, ruled the insurer did not have to pay claims on the fire because a preponderance of evidence showed the company's top officials arranged the fire to claim insurance money. Eight others were convicted, or pleaded guilty.

The rubber from the plant burned for weeks after the explosion, and black smoke billowed everywhere as a deluge of press correspondents descended upon sleepy Shelton, Connecticut, catapulting my home town into the national spotlight long before any of its residents ever thought of blowing up Times Square.

Sylvester's Tavern, and a picture of my dad taking a meatloaf out of the oven there in, were featured in a TIME magazine article chronicling the explosion and the divesting effect it had on Shelton's economy. Hundreds of people were simultaneously out of work without warning. TIME found the displaced workers drowning their sorrows in Seagram's 7, Schaffer Beer, and Rheingold Extra Dry at my dad's tavern, where they conducted the interviews for the article.

As previously reported right here in a November 2007 edition of the WANZeGRAM, a tree located on Soundview Avenue in Shelton was chosen to be the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York City that year!

And when I was but a mere boy, Shelton was once again thrust into the national spotlight when a Helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft - located less than one mile from my Long Hill Avenue home, in neighboring Stratford, Connecticut - plunged out of the sky, within yards of the roof our home, rattling dishes in our cupboards, and shaking the very foundation of our house as it sputtered out of control during its final "Test Flight," and crashed in an intersection of 3 streets in our residential neighborhood of Pine Rock Park.

All three men conducting the test flight were killed when they attempted to parachute from the disabled aircraft as it was literally falling from the sky. All three men were sliced into pieces by the rotary blades of the plummeting copter. Pieces of the blades pierced through the outer walls of people's homes, and were found imbedded in interior walls, with at least one piece of blade whizzing over the heads of people sitting on their couch, watching TV.  Miraculously no neighbors were hurt, as the helicopter burst into flames, and it crashed in that intersection surrounded by multiple homes on all sides; but the homes themselves were spared, for the most part. The body parts of the flight crew were projectiled everywhere, and were subsequently being discovered for many days after the incident, many blocks away from the crash site, in all directions. I know this sounds horrific, and perhaps even made up. But it really happened just as I have written about it; and it is, because of the sensational and, indeed, gruesome aspects of the accident that Shelton was once again the focus of nationwide media attention.

I only mention this incident because I don't want people thinking that the only reason Shelton is noteworthy is because of the unsavory business related to the now infamous Times Square Bomber.

Oh - and lest we forget; Shelton, Connecticut was the childhood home of one Orlando playwright, actor, blogger, and "Favorite Spiritual Leader" by the name of me!
