Dear Fan,

Having endured the coldest winter in memory, we now find ourselves smack dab in the middle of a heat wave.

Temperatures on the island of Manhattan reached 103 degrees this week.

Now is REALLY not the best time to leave your puppy or minor child in the car while you dash into Whiskey River or Esther's Hacienda for a quick one.

Atmosphere characters working in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - all decked out in black and fur and heavy materials in costumes created for the films (not a theme park in Orlando in the summertime) are suffering heat stroke and diaper rash.

People are afraid to swim in lakes in and around Orlando because it is this type of extreme heat which brings the micro-organisms from the lake bottoms up to the surface where they go up your nose and cause you to contract spinal meningitis, which may quite literally kill you.

Ice cream melts before you can lift it to your mouth.

The steering wheel is too hot to even touch when you first get into the car.

Children are flooding ERs with symptoms of dehydration.

Old people are literally dropping like flies...dead as doornails all over the country.

It's Summer.

Go out and enjoy it!

Familiar Disney Character Voice Bites the Dust

Cinderella is Dead!

Actually Ilene Woods, the gal who provided the voice for Cinderella in the Disney Animated (1955) Classic, died last Thursday at 81 years of age.

Woods was working as a fairly anonymous radio singer when she agreed to do a freebie for her songwriter friends Jerry Livingston and Mack David by recording a demo of their songs, including "So This Is Love," for Walt Disney Studios. Two days later, Walt himself phoned the stunned Woods and invited her to interview with him. On the spot he offered her the role of Cinderella. Miss Woods had no idea at the time that Walt and the Studio had already auditioned over 300 singesr/actresses for the job prior to Walt's hearing her voice for the very first time on the demo recording she had done as a favor. "So this is Luck" could just have easily been Cinderella's theme song.

MBA Empanels Mayoral Candidates for GLBT Forum

The Metropolitan Business Association (Gay Chamber of Commerce of Central

Florida) has announced its 2010 Candidates Forum. "On behalf of The Metropolitan Business Association and our LGBT organization co-hosts, we are very pleased to be hosting the upcoming Orange County Mayoral Candidates Forum. This event provides a unique platform for our community to gain a better understanding of where the candidates stand on LGBT equality issues, as well as economic and growth issues effecting the Greater Orlando area. We are thrilled that all of the candidates are participating, and we look forward to an informative and dynamic event." said Gina Duncan, MBA Vice-President and moderator of the upcoming debate.

In partnership with HRC, Equality Florida, and The Center, the Forum will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 6:30 to 9 pm at the Sheraton Downtown Orlando.

The format of this forum will include opening remarks from each candidate, rotation through Q&A, and closing statements. Each candidate will have a maximum of 5 minutes for opening remarks, and 3 minutes for closing remarks. The questions will be randomly selected for each candidate. The Q&A format will be more of a debate with one candidate being asked a question followed by a response and a rebuttal from the other candidates. The four candidates in the Orange County Mayoral Race are Commissioner Bill Segal, Commissioner Linda Stewart, Matthew Falconer, and Teresa Jacobs.

The MBA is at the forefront of "advocacy through economics."  For the past 18 years it has assisted small and larger LGBT-owned businesses of Central Florida with expansion and development. MBA does not endorse any candidates. With the Candidates Forum, MBA is providing its members a platform to ask the questions that truly matter to their businesses and social lives in relation to current LGBT issues in Central Florida.

The Candidates Forum is open to everyone. However, space is limited and RSVPs are recommended.  Please email forum@mborlando.org if you wish to attend.

ELLEN Helps Feed Local Pets

Ellen Degeneres, co-owner of HALO PETS, has donated 5,000 cans of pet food to The Central Florida Animal Pantry.  The food was delivered to the facility on  Thursday, July 1, 2010.

Pantry Founder Zach Wilson, who happens to be 10 years old, was on hand to accept the generous donation.

Zach created The Central Florida Animal Pantry last year in response to his concern that so many people were being forced to give up their pets due to loss of their homes, financial stress, or other circumstances that did not allow them to remain united with their beloved little critters. So Zach began a food drive through his cub scout group to collect pet food.  After housing the donations in his family's garage became impractical due to the huge response, he and his mom, Erica, found a location at 7800 S. Hwy 17-92 in Fern Park, which donated the space where The Pantry is currently located.

The Pantry is open every Thursday from 10 AM to 1PM and offers free dog and cat food to those in need.  The entire organization is run by volunteers.  To date, they have served over 1,800 pet owners in Central Florida, and have been contacted by people all over the United States who want to start a similar venture.

RETURN of CAPTAIN EO WORTH RETURN VISIT DESPITE "SHAKING"

By Robert Currie

I went to EPCOT tonight for an annual pass member preview of Captain EO. I had a ticket for 7:00 PM and left my house at 6:00. There was an accident on I-4 at US 27, and two lanes were closed. I missed my 7:00 show, but since it was raining, a lot of people did not show up and they let me in to the 7:30 show. I was really hoping they would bring back one of the pre-shows from Captain EO, preferably "Capture a Smile," because I really liked that one and have not been able to find any recording of it anywhere. I was disappointed in the pre-show they had, or actually the lack thereof. They showed a short clip of the making of the film that they said was the original pre-show. It was rather boring. It only showed a few shots of set construction and dance rehearsals, apparently not wanting to show too much before you actually saw the movie.

It was really great to see the show on the big screen in 3D again. They added some of the effects they built into the seats for "Honey I Shrunk The Audience," such as the seats shaking. This was really good in a couple of moments, such as when the ship crash lands. However, they got carried away with the effect, and the seats bounce up and down most of the movie, at times when there is nothing happening on the film that would cause any motion. It became rather annoying. People are dancing on screen and I'm bouncing up and down like there's an earthquake. Hopefully they'll calm that down.

The movie is really corny and extremely outdated, but I love it and can't wait to see it again.

After Captain EO, I ate at the Land and then watched IllumiNations. It was spitting rain very lightly while we waited for IllumiNations to start. After the show started, it started drizzling, and when the show ended, the skies opened up and it poured. It was raining so hard the rain went through my umbrella, and water was dripping on my head under my umbrella. Even though my car was in the second row in the parking lot, I was still soaking wet by the time I reached it; but I didn't care. I had a blast in my 2 ½ hours in the park! It felt like it did 20 years ago before I worked at the park and I was just a guest.

A Note From Wanzie:

By now I'm sure you've all heard the news that Larry King is leaving the airwaves, and not a moment too soon as far as I'm concerned. The old coot had become the go-to guy for anyone who wished to spin their misdeeds to a positive end without fear of challenge to anything they might lie about, and no worries about the dreaded follow-up question or rebuttal, both of which Larry seemed to forgot about a good 5 to 6 years ago.

I swear to god, Larry would accommodate Ted Bundy so he could explain and excuse away his crimes on the over the hill late night talk show host's forum if circumstances made such an appearance possible.

And just to remind us how feeble a broadcast journalist he has become, Larry tells us he would like to see Ryan Seacrest take over his job.

Really?

The cute little impish man from American Idol who has no background what so ever in journalism or politics, and whose interview history involves no one of any merit outside those on the fast track to fame in the entertainment industry...this is the person King feels should succeed him?

Exit stage left, Larry! Larry should have said so long so long ago!

Not so long ago (last week actually), the Florida State Legislature passed a few laws that illustrate just how out of touch, in a Larry King sort of way, that body of enlightenment has become.

It is now illegal for any store to sell a bong unless tobacco products constitute 75% of the store's retail sales.

Like that's going stop anyone from smoking weed!

How redunkulous!

Oil is invading our beaches, the aquifer is in danger, the everglades are in danger, the economy is going down the tubes, the housing market is completely upside down, and our state is in a health care and education crisis, and the ass wipes in Tallahassee spent untold hours debating whether or not to ban the sale of bongs! Then they did ban the sale of bongs (except by tobacco shops), and are patting themselves on the backs as though they've actually accomplished something.

Last week our Legislators also made it illegal to consume horse meat in the state of Florida.

Aren't you proud of our State Representatives for tackling all these really important issues head on and enacting landmark legislation to improve our quality of life?

Meanwhile up in Washington, the Supreme Court has ruled that Gun Control of any kind is unconstitutional.

The inmates are truly running the asylum!

Finally, with regards to our immigration issues; may we please be clear on this one point? - No one but Native American Tribes people are here legally.  Our ancestors invaded this land and slaughtered its indigenous peoples almost to the point of extinction. Those who survived the invasion were herded onto designated plots of ground, and were told they no longer had any rights or claims to the land of their birth. We stole this country by brutal and life-taking means. Unless you are of Native American Indian decent, you have no more right to claim this country is exclusively yours or that of your marauding ancestors than I have to enter your house uninvited only to take possession of it, and by force, move you to live only on a small parcel of land in the far corner of the back yard.

Our American history is short, but our collective American memory seems shorter still.

Let's not get too heady or defensive over the premise of creating a legal means to citizenship for the 11 million "illegals" already here.  And let us not forget that the vast majority of these immigrants would not be here in the first place, except that they knew they could find work here. And work they do.

They do the work we don't want to do. They do the work the farming and the food processing industries illegally underpay them to do. The very real criminal activity in this scenario is that of the so called legal American who is only too happy to employ and underpay the tide of immigrants we attract to this country by this very means.

Enforce the laws already on the books? Yes! Reform immigration policy and strengthen the security of our borders? Yes! But let's not be delusional in thinking we have the means or the money to round up and deport 11 million people in any way that would make sense. If we provide them a legal path to citizenship, we can and will tax their income, and then they will be contributing to, rather than being perceived as a burden upon, our society.

The powers that be in the country wanted cheap labor. Well, they got it. And they have abused it for far too long. They don't get to now simply gather up this mass of humanity, which they attracted here in the first place, and sweep them back over the border declaring, "We're done with you."

Everyone is so worked up about "the Mexicans invading our country." Let's not forget that the very borders "the Mexicans" are crossing are borders we, as Americans, created when we literally took Mexican land away from the persons who were born on it, and by force declared that land to be part of the United States.

As far as I'm concerned, "the Mexicans" - being true North American natives - have more right to access this country than anyone of us who traces our ancestry back to Europe.

Our country has a long history of overpowering, exploiting, and disposing of unwanted people. It needs to stop. And we, as Americans, need to stop and take note of our brief and inhumane history which is fraught with all manner of atrocities committed against the indigenous North American people as our ancestors greedily forged onward taking what ever they wished to take, by what ever bloody and murderous means they could employ.

As Americans we have many reasons to be proud. But our score card on human rights and civility toward those perceived as being different
(or less than) ourselves is least among those reasons. We are now faced with the unique opportunity to adjust that score just a little, by being willing to take responsibility for a situation we, as a nation, helped foster, and to deal with it in a way that illustrates that we value ALL people, regardless of their ethnicity or accent.
