David Lee's Musical MON-DAZE Anchors Week at Stonewall

With the recent acquisition of a full liquor license, our good pal Stephen - bartender/owner of the all-new Stonewall Neighborhood Bar, has secured some of your favorite folks to host a themed evening every night of the week.

Starting the week out is David Lee's YOUTUBE MUSICAL MON-DAZE! David shares his favorite YouTube music videos, which he has discovered and pre-selected throughout the week for your every-Monday-night enjoyment! All your favorites and some fun and funky delights from Broadway, stage and screen, to brand spanking new musical artists!

"Liza and Lady GaGa meet MIKA and The Muppet Babies at one of the freshest Happy Hours in O-Town! There's even food! Ala Carte Pizzas and Lights in the Piazza, and Bar Food and Broadway Bares and Bears dancing to GLEE O-My!" - says Lee, who goes on to pose the question, "Where else can you see Cheyenne Jackson singing in his underwear, and gospel stoner songs from The Lawrence Welk Show?"

Answer: Only at the fabulous new Stonewall Bar on Church Street with its well-lit off-street, fenced-in parking lot. If you arrive and David is performing the opening from West Side Story in that lot, just honk and he'll "HOLD" and "CLEAR FOR TALENT!"  The fun starts at 6:30 PM, so come right from work.

Tuesdays the fabulous Vj ViVian plays music and videos "from the past" with something everyone will remember and love from their disco daze to the gay anthems and pop music of the more recent past.

Wednesdays, Orlando's favorite Jew Karaoke hostess, Janine Klein, belts her heart and lungs out while playing party hostess, visiting and hobnobbing, and encouraging others to get up and "Sing out Louise."  The party gets started around 9:30 PM and goes late.

Thursdays, Tony Edge invites you to come in your underwear to receive happy hour prices all night. It's THINK ABOUT IT THURSDAYS - an underwear party with one of Orlando's hottest and sweetest bartender/personal trainer hunks, and it's only at Stonewall!

Tonight - Friday, October 23 - Jimmy Stevens is filling in for regular Fearless Friday Karaoke host Scott Carter, who is busy being Frankenfurter in the Rocky Horror show during Universal's Halloween Horror Nights. The microphone is there for the taking beginning around 9:30 PM. So if you are a real Karaoke Junkie, you can begin with Twisted Sisters from 6-9 over at the PH, and continue your Karaoke habit at Stonewall, which is just a stone's throw away from PH.

SAVAGE SATURDAYS is a weekly Leather Night gathering. (Fairly self-explanatory.)

On SOCIAL SUNDAYS, Keith, who used to bartend over at Wyldes, presides over the casual and friendly, laid-back atmosphere and conversation among friends at your very own neighborhood bar on a lazy day.

Then comes Monday and it's time for David Lee's YOUTUBE MUSICAL MON-DAZE! all over again, but with a new, carefully assembled line-up of videos, chosen by David, with you and your likes and enjoyment in mind.

No matter the day of the week; there's always a special reason to visit

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP

Directed by
Christine Robison

Now Playing
 Sleuth's Mystery Dinner Shows
Not A Mystery Series

This is NOT a dinner show. The Mystery Of Irma Vep is being presented (oddly enough) as part of Sleuth's Not A Mystery Series, which typically presents legitimate Broadway, and Off-Broadway plays (as well as shows created by local artists) as a weekend alternative to their traditional Mystery Dinner Show fare. This play, which is not a you-solve-the-murder interactive dinner show, just happens to be an Off-Broadway, hi-camp, drag-inclusive (Doug plays the grand dame Lady Enid, among other characters) highly comedic play that also just happens to be a mystery.

Ludlam's Obie-winning farce has enjoyed a run as one of the most-produced plays in America. On a "dark and stormy night," Lady Enid arrives at an estate with her new husband, who is under the spell of his deceased first wife and haunted by something that's prowling the grounds.  Strange things begin to happen around Lady Enid while the mysterious portrait of Irma Vep hanging over the fireplace gazes down upon her.  The Mystery of Irma Vep  is a hilarious comedy that satirizes everything from Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca to Victorian Melodrama to The Mummy's Curse.

DOUG and Josh play all eight characters in the play, racing through a literal quick-change marathon complete with werewolves, vampires, and damsels in distress. Combine all this with crazy plot twists and gender-bending comedy, and you have the recipe for a show that is just meant to be seen by WANZeGRAM subscribers.

The ticket cost is only $17 for these Not A Mystery shows. But because you are a WANZeGRAM subscriber, you qualify for a steeply discounted rate of only $12 per ticket - or 2 tickets for the price of 1 - a $17 savings - simply by asking for the "WANZeGRAM Discount" when you call to make your reservation.

Every Phantom Ticket = a Donation to Fix Lake Eola Icon

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
is teaming up with the City of Orlando to help refurbish the recently incapacitated Lake Eola Fountain. For the remaining week of October (ending October 31), $5 of every ticket purchased to any performance of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA will be donated to the City of Orlando to help restore the Lake Eola Fountain.

"We are so excited that the producers of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA have taken a vested interest in our city, again" said Ron Legler, president and CEO of Florida Theatrical Association, the presenter of FAIRWINDS Broadway Across America - Orlando.  Theater patrons of Orlando may remember when THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA made its first appearance in Orlando in 1994 and spearheaded a $4 million renovation to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. "They always seem to step up to the plate and give back to the city. It's a wonderful example of how the arts can enhance the city above and beyond a spectacular performance!"

The Cameron Mackintosh/Really Useful Theatre Company, Inc. production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, directed by Harold Prince, returns to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre in Orlando January 20 through February 14, 2010. The four-week run of PHANTOM could translate into over $300,000 to help repair the Lake Eola Fountain.  In just the first five days of October, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA raised $2,315 for the Lake Eola Fountain by selling 463 tickets. And the money keeps rolling in with every ticket purchased through the end of this month.

"Since the Lake Eola Fountain was struck by lightning, there has been an outpouring of community support, but the generosity of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is unmatched.  I applaud THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA for their commitment and investment in our City," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

We've Got Mail!

Dear Gary,

I was just on my way out the door and on second thought decided to step back in and write you in response to your column in last week's WANZeGRAM regarding Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan.

I very much enjoyed reading your comments, and fully agree with the sentiment expressed therein.

I don't mean to belabor the subject, but I am part of the large group of people in this town who have had the occasion to be on the receiving end of Commissioner Sheehan's hatefulness on more than one occasion.

Following are some notes I made on the topic following Wanzie's experience with Patty at the WAVE Awards at Hamburger Mary's:

A true leader lifts people up and attracts others to follow them.  Does Patty?

Who are Patty's people?  Who exactly is her following?  And this cannot include the two people, Jim Young and Chase Smith, who work for her.

A true leader is not selfish and has the good of others and community first in mind.  Does Patty?

Why would Patty work so hard to keep Covenant House out of her neighborhood?  No organization serving homeless youth in this nation is more respected.  Plus they serve an inordinate % of gay and lesbian youth as this population is much more likely to become homeless.  Was Patty thinking of the good of the youth in opposing the Lebanese-Syrian Community Center site for Covenant House, or was she thinking political expedience and getting elected?

A true leader has vision for the future and inspires others to join in on it.  Does Patty?

The original proposal to ban group feedings at Lake Eola came out of Patty's office (written by her Aide Chase Smith.).  Her vision for Orlando obviously includes no homeless people in sight, but what viable solutions does she offer?  Why would she not meet with representatives of Orlando's Food Not Bombs?  The ordinance, by the way, was overturned in the courts, and now the City intends to appeal the decision and spend an additional $30,000.00 of taxpayer monies fighting the decision.

A true leader affects positive change for organizations with which they share common goals.  Does Patty?

One would have thought that The Rainbow Democratic Club and, to a lesser degree, the GLBCC, would have thrived once Patty was elected.  Instead, these two groups have had their most challenging years during Patty's reign.

A true leader is not a hypocrite. Is Patty?

Why would Patty have said to me, "You should support me (for election) because I'm gay and you're gay," and then four years later write an article endorsing Sheri McInvale over Patrick Howell for State House stating that, "...the gay community should not support Patrick Howell just because he's gay..."

We'll continue our search for respectable (and respectful) leaders.

Keep up the good work!

Jeff Horn

WANZIE,

Here's the question that gets me when working at the Disney Toll Plaza -
"Can I pay with a travelers check?"

My answer: Only if I can lay down in front of your car, and have you drive over me.

WANZIE,

Please ask your readers to not take this out on the cast member working at the toll plaza. When one pays in pennies, it affects no one but the poor person who has to count that drawer at the end of a 100 degrees, 16 hour day, when they know their hours WILL NOT be extended because it took them 15 minutes longer to count their drawer.  Please direct your guests to the Walt Disney World website and ask them to click on the CONTACT US link, and send an email directly to the executive offices. Or better yet, to Al Weiss, or Jay Rasulo, or Meg Croften, or Erin Wallace directly.

We put up with a great deal only to have to answer to a 19-year old manager intern, who has never had any managerial experience, who is getting a call from the Park Duty Manager wondering why the toll plaza has all lanes open and is only moving 52 cars a minute, instead of the much more efficient 60 cars a minute.

World in Brief Title

THEATER - YANKEE TAVERN
Orlando Shakes presentation of a modern thriller by award-winning playwright Steven Dietz.  A condemned tavern in New York City is the setting for intrigue and conspiracy centering on the events of September 11, 2001. "It is the Mother of All Conspiracies: when an entire nation is led to believe something completely different than the thing they have seen for themselves!" What is coincidence and what is fact?

The outstanding cast, under the direction of Anne Hering, includes Shakespeare Theater favorites Tom Nowicki (Opus), Jim Ireland (Glass Menagerie), Zack Robidas (Wittenberg) and Shakespeare Theater newcomer Katherine Skelton.

Yankee Tavern is the kind of play you'll be thinking about long after you leave the theater. Artistic Director Jim Helsinger says of the play, "The first preview audience was captivated by act one, with lots of lively discussion at intermission.  Before the final moments of the show, the air in the Goldman theatre was charged with curiosity as to what happens next."  Come decide for yourself.
